The Halford Colony: Bonded by Blood - Press Release

Movie Review - Awake (2007)

Movie Review: Awake (2007)
Starring: Hayden Christensen, Jessica Alba and Terrence Howard
Director: Joby Harold
Genres: Drama and Thriller
Runtime: 1 Hour and 24 Minutes
Rated: R for language, an intense disturbing situation, and brief drug use.

The Story: What would you do if you were having surgery and in the midst of it all you were some how able to still be awake leaving you completely conscious and feeling every single torment that was handed to you? What would you do if you were paralyzed and incapable of doing anything about it? This is what happens to Clay. This is what happens in real life. This is what can happen to YOU!

My Review:Its been so long since I written a movie review I forget where to start and for that matter how to express myself with out ruining the movie for those that have yet to watch it. However, I will try my best.

A few years ago, I wrote a column listing “My Top 10 scariest movies Of All Time”. On that list I mention how a true scary movie has to have the belief factor. In short the belief factor is when you watch a movie and its so compelling that when you leave the theatre you actually believe that what you have just witnessed could happen to YOU. Its not about seeing gore or seeing lots of blood, its simply about believing what you just saw could happen. Its leaving the movie theatre and thinking, “Holy fuck! Im scared Im going to die!” That’s what makes a true scary movie or at least one of the things.

Well, this movie I believe has some of that. It wasn’t a Oscar type movie or even the scariest movie I ever saw. Infact it wasn’t scary at all. What it was though was a good thriller. It made me think and got into my head which to me is more scarier then seeing body parts chopped off.

One of the things that made me want to see this movie is reading about how this can happen to someone in real life. Ever since I was a kid I always hated hospitals and now as an adult its no different. I don’t like needles, I don’t like doctors, hell I don’t even like to sit in the waiting area for someone who is getting a normal check up. Everything about hospitals just give me this bad vibe. I’ve been there to many times over the last few years and have seen to many loved ones pass to ever feel comfy being in the hospital. I guess Im ranting a lot though and should get more into the movie itself.

The movie, “Awake” is about a young man named Clay who has problems with his heart. Clay doesn’t want to have surgery done, but realizes that he has an opportunity of a lifetime once a donor has just come in with his same body type. With out giving to much away, Clay confides in a friend to do the heart surgery to him. Someone he believes he could trust. Someone that knows what they are doing and is a expert in his field. What Clay doesn’t know though is what will happen to him as soon as he is put to sleep. It is a condition known as, "Anesthetical Awareness”. Yes I looked up the condition. Did you actually think I could spell that big ass word?!

Here is a description of the condition courtesy of: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anesthesia_awareness

“For patients undergoing general anesthesia, very few experience an anesthetic that is inadequate to keep them unconscious during an operation. In rare instances, the anesthetic may be inadequate resulting in awareness. In this situation, which is very rare, a patient may feel the pain or pressure of surgery, hear conversations, or feel as if they cannot breathe. The patient may be unable to communicate any distress because they have been given a paralytic/muscle relaxant. If anesthesia awareness does occur it is more common for the patient to be aware but do not feel pain or other unpleasant sensations.”

So there you have it. All nicely written in big words that most of you will have to look up now. That’s what happened to Clay in this movie, only he felt pain and it just seemed like some crazy F’N nightmare he was living and feeling. I was watching the movie and cringing, but maybe its because as I said earlier I don’t like hospitals, especially operating tables. Im someone that watches the TV show “Grey’s Anatomy” all intense. Serious!

What happened to Clay in the movie is actually something that has played in my head in real life. I actually have had visions about something like this possibly happening to me. Me Screaming for help and know one seeing what is happening to me. It’s a scary feeling to have…to be alone. That’s why I believe that when someone is in the hospital and he or she tell you something LISTEN to them. Even if its someone old, what he or she is telling you could be there. Don’t automatically assume that they are so drugged up that they are seeing things because you don’t really know. Try and listen and pretend that you are the one laying in the hospital bed. How would you feel?

Anyways, the movie was good. If you are going to have surgery anytime soon, you may want to skip it though. Shit I would! Why the fuck would you go and see this before having surgery!? However, if you just want to be entertained and kept interested for a short one hour and 24 minutes of your time, I don’t see why you wouldn’t give this movie a chance. Incase though, if you are going to the big screen just to see Jessica Alba in all her glory, I will stop you now and tell you that she is not nude in this movie. Infact one of the things that I thought would happen in the movie didn’t. I was picturing a scene where Clay is getting his stomach ripped open and suddenly Jessica Alba is thrown with both of her hands on top of him while she is bended over and getting taken from behind and is being gang banged by all the surgeons doing the surgery. Well, that scene never happened. I know what a jip right? lol.

Its not my fault though, did anyone see the trailer? Clay was envisioning some weird things don’t you think? Ok, maybe it was just me then. Anyways, Jessica Alba once again plays her role well. I know that’s not saying much, but what else do you want me to say about her character? Watch the movie! Its no Oscar winning performance, but is anyone going to this movie for that? Alright then.

As with all mystery and thriller suspense movies things occur that will try and shock you however I have to admit that I was pretty much dead on in everything that occurred. Before even seeing the movie I predicted everything just from the trailer alone. Well, minus the scene of Jessica I said above, but yeah everything else I was right about.

Final Thoughts: Im not sure what else to say with out just telling you all of my opinions and ruining the movie for you. It was good. I think it was entertaining enough to watch. It did made me think a lot. Could you imagine going to the hospital and having surgery done only to be awaken and hearing the doctors talking? Feeling the pain and drilling and cutting and so forth? That’s gotta be something that will haunt a person for LIFE! The movie takes a while to get to the surgery itself since its more or less slowly building up process to that moment in time, but it’s a very short movie so once that happens the good stuff really begins. I doubt I would get this movie on DVD because its not something I want to see again and again. It would make me think to much. Still, I suggest checking it out. The previews to upcoming movies looked good too. One was about some Orphanage and I cant recall the rest right now. Jessica Alba will be in another movie though called, “The Eye” (I think?). It might be worth checking out, Im not sure yet. I guess that’s it. I know I didn’t talk about other actors in this movie and there were a few I’ve seen before. In example, Terrence Howard who is seen in many other flicks, but what can I really say, he played a good part. He was Clay’s doctor who could not be trusted as shown in the trailer. That’s about it. I wont say anymore cuz I don’t want to ruin it. Check it out!
