I want a New Drug..One That Won't Make Me Sick
|
Let me take you back to 1988…imagine the flashback music and fog or whatever. A young boy no older than 14 sits in his room pasted with posters of Def Leopard and Guns N’ Roses. He has earrings in his left ear and spends all his time listening to music and talking to girls. Now imagine him sitting next to an open window puffing away on cigs that he stole from his parents who smoke like chimneys.
Ok now imagine you can not take international flights due to having to wait too long to smoke, going in and out of security to smoke, leaving your wife who is in labor to go outside and catch a smoke or soon as you got out of the chapel..lighting up. I could go on and on what a slave to smoking really feels like.
Ok now imagine your 3 year old son asking you “Daddy, what are you doing?” Well that is all I could bear…so before that happened I said I would quit. So let me see…I have done the Gum. didn’t work…I did the patches…didn’t work…I did cold turkey..didn’t work…I did Welbutrin..didn’t work…I did hypnosis and it didn’t work…I also tried combinations of these and guess what?? Didn’t work. I tried all these methods over the years and nothing works..or if it works it was too hard.
About 9 months ago I am at my doctors and he asked me how much I smoked and I told him a pack a day for more than 15 years..he said you might want to stop..I said Duh..of course I want to stop, but I am a slave. He asked me if I heard of Chantix, a drug that just came out from Pfizer…I said “No”. He explained it and I said fine, I will try anything to quit. I wanted to quit before my son turned 3. I got the script filled and believe it or not my insurance covered it.
So I start taking the pills and wow I don’t want to smoke, but it is still not easy…the first week I was having problems sleeping and my stomach hurt…it was tough but I made it through and every week since has gotten easier.
Flash to 2 months ago….It has been 6 months since I last smoked. My script is ready to run out..so after reading on the internet from other users..it says to wean off…so I wean off and stop taking the miracle drug. 2 days later I am riding home with my family and I completely lost it…I was SO vicious..I yelled and yelled at my wife and kid…this went on for a few days and I finally figured out that quitting the medicine has caused this.
I went to the doctor and told them…they gave me Prozac. Ok so it was bad enough to be on one drug, but now I am on two. Oh did I mention my sex drive was nill after I started taking the Chantix and even worse with the Prozac. I weaned off the Chantix again and the weaned off the Prozac. That was about two weeks ago, I am not vicious and not smoking. I guess my point is that this truly was a miracle drug as I do not smoke anymore…but it cost me…cost me being mean to my family for quite awhile while I quit, my sex life nearly gone, a couple of doctors appts, many refills and copays, many hours on the internet researching side effects and many…many bad nights sleeping. BUT I do not smoke anymore and have very little desire too…so I guess it evens out in the end. Then I kept thinking of how much we are a slave to medicine….really makes you wonder how people lived with out Pharmaceuticals 50 years ago….No Prozac, No Riddlen, No Sleeping Pills, No Cholesterol medicine and No Viagra. I really think that most of these drugs are great and we are living longer, but I think doctors prescribe drugs instead of treating a person. When is the last time the doctor asked you “Besides what you came in here for, how is everything else?” Usually the docs I see barely look at you, come in looking at charts, some questions about the issue and then ship you out of there with a small piece of paper and a copay.
Wouldn’t it be nice to go back 50 years ago where Doctors actually cared about you and how you were feeling instead of trying to fit as many patients in one day as possible. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a doctor ask you about work or family. I think I saw a sign that says “Please be considerate to other patients and if you have more than two ailments then book another appointment” Or something like that. Wouldn’t it be nice to go to a doctor and get everything done at once? Ahhh but if we did go back 50 years, I would still be smoking. |
