Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story
|
Movie Review: Dodgeball (2004) Starring Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Christine Taylor
The Story: A few losers at a local gym some how need to come up with $50,000 in 30 days in order to save their precious place, so they do what everyone in the world would do under tough times they try their luck at the lotto. No actually they play Volley ball baby! On no wait, I meant dodgeball. Yeah!...
My Review: When I first saw the trailer to this movie I didn’t expect much from it. Infact I didn’t expect anything at all, but then something weird happened along the way. I some how kept catching the trailer over and over again until I convinced myself that this movie could actually be funny. Well, I saw the movie now and lets just say I have a mixed reaction towards it. I didn’t think it completely sucked, but at the same time I didn’t think it was great either. It was just OK at best. Some parts were funny and then other parts were real dumb.
Ben Stiller in this movie is known as “White”. His character is pretty much the same type of guy he played in the movie “Heavyweights”. He is once again a fitness guru who is obsessed with his body and staying fit because he use to be overweight and is not going to be like that again. Just like in the movie Heavyweights Ben Stiller’s character is played way over the top which makes it funny at times. I like Ben Stiller, so he always makes me laugh.
The thing about this movie though is, its so predictable. You have a bunch of misfits who all work at a small local gym and are basically a bunch of losers in their own pathetic ways. Then you have Ben Stiller (White) who is also an owner of another gym…a better one at that. Well, Ben sees his opportunity in taking over the smaller gym since they own the bank $50,000 dollars and they now have only 30 days to pay it all back. Well, when push comes to shove the underdogs (the average Joes) find out that they could win $50,000 dollars and save the place by joining and winning some dodge ball tournament and I don’t want to give anything else away, but I’m sure you have all seen this type of movie many times before, so you already know what’s gonna happen.
I think what made this movie funny though was Vince Vaughn’s character. Vince always makes me laugh. He was hilarious in the movie “Old School” which I love and he was once again funny here. He doesn’t over due his character. He is just funny on screen. He has that calm funniness about him that makes me laugh when he is talking. If that even makes sense. In this movie..Vince (Peter) is sort of like a leader to these losers since they all look up to him. He also has some witty lines in the movie when he talks with Ben Stiller and the two guys exchanged some funny moments here and there, so the movie wasn’t a complete waste of time, I just thought it could have been better. How? I have no freakin idea. I’m the type of person that enjoys a good comedy movie and I don’t mind stupid comedy, infact those are usually the best ones to me. That’s the reason I laughed when I watched the movie Zoolander which also stars Ben Stiller, its because it was so stupid I had to laugh.
In this movie with out giving anything away there were some moments that made me laugh, but otherwise it seemed that the creators were trying way to hard, so they winded up over doing it with some real dumb jokes. I wont say what because my reviews are spoiler free, but I just mean jokes that were just trying to get a cheap laugh. Like I said I laughed though, so it was ok, but I just wanted more. The movie didn’t bore me, so I wont call it a total loss.
Also the movie had a LOT of Cameo appearances by many celeb’s and actors that we all know. I would mention them all here, but its kinda funny how they just pop up on screen and the way they were used, so I don’t want to give anything away. Trust me, lots of celeb’s that we all know appeared in this movie and that made it funny. Oh and Ben Stiller’s wife is once again in another movie with him except this time she is with the “Average Joes” instead of her hubby Ben Stiller.
Final Thoughts: There really isn’t much else to say about this movie. Bottom line is, if you like those underdog type movies or if you like Ben Stiller when he plays his over the top characters I recommend seeing it and IF you do see it make sure to stay for the whole closing credits as they show some extra footage. Trust me. Otherwise just wait for it to come out on DVD because you are not missing anything here and atleast on DVD they might show you some gag reels or something. For me Vince Vaughn is what made it funnier then it actually was. Ben Stiller was good too, but Vince stole the show. The supporting cast weren’t anything special. The kid from Jeepers Creepers was in it as a geek, but eh…you gotta see the movie. No better yet, fuck it don’t watch it! Save your money to see movies like Spider-man 2 and I, Robot starring Will Smith because those two movies are gonna kick ass!
